Choosing Halogen Spot Bulbs

The most common halogen spot lights bulbs are either the GU10, which are normally mains power versions, or the push fit with two pins, low voltage type. MR stand for Mirror Reflector and the number is the diameter of the front in eighths of an inch. So MR16 is 2 inches or 50/51mm in diameter.

The GU10 has a simple ‘twist and lock’ action to insert and remove from the fitting. The standard GU10 (PAR 16) measures 50mm across the face of the bulb and usually have a glass front. As well as the standard range there are also Energy saving, Cool fit, Aluminium and Infra-red coated types with longer life options. They come in a variety of wattages, colours and beam angles to suit your display requirement. The other GU10 (PAR 36) measures 111mm across the face and is used more for display lighting.

The MR16 50mm diameter halogen spot light is one of the standards in lighting displays. The 2 pins on the bottom of the light bulb and is a simple push fit into the light fitting. This low voltage spotlight requires a transformer. They come in a variety of wattages, beam angles and colours to suit your requirements. The GU5.3 means that there is a distance of 5.3mm between the two pins.

The MR11 35mm diameter halogen spot bulb has 2 pins on the bottom of the bulb as well and is also a push fit into the light fitting. The GU4 means that there is a distance of 4mm between the two pins. They come in a variety of wattages and beam angles. A transformer is required as this is a low voltage spotlight. Some of these lamps have a glass front for added safety.

 The MR8 25mm diameter halogen spot bulb has 2 pins on the bottom of the bulb as well and is a push fit into the light fitting. Used for specific lighting displays as a spot or flood beam angle. The GZ4 means that the base and distance is 4mm between the two pins. A transformer is required as this is a low voltage spotlight. Some of these lamps have a glass front for added safety. The MR range of lamps is signified and also known by their various ‘M’ numbers and these are used in our Stock part references. All the halogen spot light bulbs last between 2000 – 15000 hours average life depending on the light bulb and brand.
